We A.R.E. Pride: January 28 & 29

by Admin

We A.R.E. (Athlete Reaching Equality) Pride: Cal and Stanford edition is a week dedicated to generating awareness for LGBT inclusion in sports. The manifestation of the events taking place during this week are generated from two student athletes at Cal and Stanford, Mikayla Lyles and Toni Kokenis. The primary event will be a panel event which includes pioneering and influential figures in the LGBT community (Wade Davis, Helen Carroll, Pat Griffin, Nevin Caple, Mikayla, and Toni). The weeks events were motivated by wanting to provide the student campus and Bay Area communities with a space for dialogue surrounding this social issue. Ultimately, our goal is to generate awareness, bridge the gap between the older generation and our youth in progressing LGBT inclusion, in addition to encouraging people to consider another way of thinking when relating LGBT issues with athletics.

Panel Event itself will include, art gallery, t-shirts, refreshments, presentation of Cal’s extended version of “You Can Play” video (Cal panel), short documentary on gender stereotypes and homophobia on Stanford’s campus (Stanford panel), and a panel discussion about diversity and LGBT inclusion in sports. The panel members include, Wade Davis (You Can Play Executive Director, former NFL player), Pat Griffin (author and pioneer for LGBT equality), Helen Carroll (pioneer for LGBT equality, NCLR) Nevin Caple (co-founder of Br{ache the Silence LGBT inclusion in sports organization), Mikayla Lyles (current Cal women’s basketball player), Toni Kokenis (current Stanford women’s basketball player).
